Becoming Orthodox

The Orthodox take becoming Orthodox very seriously, just as she does all the sacraments of the church. However, becoming Orthodox can be described the same as the sacrament of marriage. There are stages on the road to becoming Orthodox, just as a couple moves through stages in their relationship before meeting at the altar to become married. Likewise, once you are Orthodox it is a serious commitment, just as marriage is a lifelong commitment, so to is being an Orthodox Christian. Therefore becoming Orthodox is not as simple as saying, “I’ve decided to be an Orthodox Christian.” Below is a description of the steps one needs to meet before Holy Baptism/Chrismation can take place.

First Step: Inquire

If you are curious about the Orthodox faith, you are warmly
welcomed as an inquirer. There is no commitment at this
stage—simply an invitation to learn, ask questions, experience
the life of the Church, and prayerfully discern what Orthodoxy
teaches. The information below is a helpful place to begin.

Second Step: Catechumen

If, after exploring the Orthodox faith, you feel ready to take
the next step, you are invited to speak with the priest about
becoming a catechumen. This is a more intentional time of
learning and preparation as you grow in your understanding
of the Church and discern becoming Orthodox.
The information below offers a helpful overview of this next step.

Third Step: Holy Baptism/Chrismation

After completing your time as a catechumen, you will be ready to be received into the Orthodox Church through the Sacraments of
Holy Baptism and/or Chrismation. These Sacraments mark
a joyful and meaningful beginning to your life in the Church.
Below, you’ll find a video explaining the Sacraments,
along with a helpful checklist of what to bring for your
Baptism or Chrismation.

Fourth Step: Become A Steward

After being received into the Orthodox Church becoming a steward is a meaningful way to take an active role in the life of the parish. Stewardship is more than paying dues—it is a prayerful commitment of our time, talents, and financial resources to support the ministries, outreach, and daily needs of the Church. By making and fulfilling a stewardship pledge, each parishioner helps sustain the parish community they have joined.
