Did You Know?
Giving From Your IRA Is A Tax-Smart Way to Support Our Parish
If you are age 70½ or older, you may be able to make a gift directly from your IRA to the Church through a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD).
A QCD can be a simple and tax-efficient way to fulfill your annual stewardship commitment, make a special gift, or provide additional support to the ministries of our parish.
What is a Qualified
Charitable Distribution?
A Qualified Charitable Distribution allows an eligible IRA owner to have funds sent directly from an IRA to a qualified charitable organization, such as the Church.
When the requirements are met, the amount transferred can generally be excluded from your taxable income.
What are the benefits?
Your gift may not be included in your taxable income.
Unlike a regular IRA withdrawal, an eligible QCD can generally be excluded from taxable income.
It may satisfy part or all of your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD).
If you are required to take an RMD, a QCD may count toward the amount you are required to withdraw for the year.
You do not have to itemize deductions to receive the QCD tax treatment.
This can be especially helpful for parishioners who use the standard deduction rather than itemizing.
You can support the parish directly from retirement assets.
Your gift can be applied toward your stewardship commitment or another eligible parish purpose.
An Example
If you are 75 years old and are required to take a $25,000 Required Minimum Distribution from an IRA and if you would like to give $10,000 to the Church.
Instead of withdrawing the entire $25,000 personally and then writing the Church a check, you could potentially direct:
$10,000 from the IRA directly to the Church
and
$15,000 from the IRA to yourself
The $10,000 charitable distribution may count toward your RMD while generally being excluded from taxable income.
Important to Know
You must generally be at least age 70½ at the time of the distribution to make a Qualified Charitable Distribution.
For 2026, the annual QCD exclusion limit is $111,000 per eligible IRA owner.
A QCD that is excluded from taxable income generally cannot also be claimed as a charitable deduction.
Because everyone's financial and tax situation is different, please consult your tax adviser, CPA, financial adviser, or IRA custodian to determine whether a Qualified Charitable Distribution is appropriate for you.
Your Stewardship Makes a Difference
Your generosity allows our parish to worship, minister, educate, serve those in need, care for our facilities, and continue the work of the Church for generations to come.
Thank you for prayerfully considering the many ways you can support our parish through stewardship.
