Make a Real Impact.
Giving appreciated stocks, mutual funds, or other securities can be a simple and tax-efficient way to support our Parish. For eligible appreciated assets, donating the investment rather than selling it first may allow you to avoid realizing capital gains on the donated securities while potentially qualifying for a charitable deduction. See the two common options below to make the gift of your appreciated securities.
How to Make a Gift of Appreciated Stock
OPTION 1: Transfer Securities Directly to the Church
1. Decide what you would like to give.
Identify the stock or other eligible security and the number of shares you would like to donate. Securities held for more than one year may offer particularly favorable tax treatment.
2. Obtain the Church's brokerage information.
Contact the Church office for our current stock-transfer instructions, including:
Brokerage Firm
DTC Number
Account Name
Account Number
3. Request the transfer from your broker.
Contact your financial advisor or brokerage firm and tell them you would like to make a charitable gift of securities. Many brokerage firms allow you to initiate the transfer online.
Provide the Church's brokerage information and specify the security and number of shares you wish to transfer.
4. Please let us know about your gift.
This is important! Securities can arrive in the Church's brokerage account without sufficient information identifying the donor.
OPTION 2: Give Through a Donor-Advised Fund
If you have a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF), you may be able to contribute appreciated securities to your DAF and then recommend a charitable grant to the Church.
1. Contribute appreciated securities to your DAF.
Follow your DAF sponsor's instructions for contributing stock or other securities.
2. Log in to your DAF account and recommend a grant.
Search for: Greek Orthodox Church of Greater Salt Lake EIN: [CHURCH EIN]
3. Choose your grant amount and purpose.
If your DAF provider allows it, indicate whether your gift is intended for Stewardship, Capital Improvements, a Memorial, a specific ministry, or General Support.
4. Please let us know about your gift.
DAF grants sometimes arrive with limited donor or designation information. A quick email or call to the Church office helps us properly acknowledge and apply your gift.
Please Contact the Church Administrator
Maria Papadakis
Office 801-328-9681
churchoffice@gocgsl.org
Let us know your name, the security being transferred, the approximate number of shares, and whether you would like your gift designated for Stewardship, Capital Improvements, a Memorial, a specific ministry, or another Parish purpose.
Keep your acknowledgment and transfer records.
The church will acknowledge receipt of your charitable gift.
Please retain this acknowledgment along with your brokerage records for your files.
Why Consider Appreciated Stock?
A gift of appreciated securities may provide advantages compared with selling the investment and donating the cash. Depending upon your individual circumstances, you may be able to avoid capital gains tax on the donated appreciation and potentially receive a charitable income-tax deduction for the value of your gift.
Most importantly, your gift directly supports the worship, ministries, programs, facilities, and mission of the Greek Orthodox Church of Greater Salt Lake.
